Description:
Getting ready to attend a Level I Assessment? This course will help you prepare for this first step in your exciting career as an instructor. This Assessment Prep is required for all Level I candidates who are not yet affiliated with a resort and can support those with limited access to formal training. Through the lens of the Learning Connection Model, gain an understanding of the Fundamentals (technical, teaching and people skills) in the beginner/novice zone. Through on-hill practice, peer-to-peer activities, teaching scenarios and group discussions, become familiar with the format, assessment criteria and activities of the Level I Assessment. Participants should arrive prepared to be on snow for two days and able to ride safely on all green and blue terrain.
Learning Experiences:
Specific activities will vary depending on the group’s needs and environmental conditions and typically include:
- A review of the PSIA-AASI Level I standard, associated Performance Guides and Assessment Forms.
- Developing proficiency in the Riding Assessment Activities, practicing accurate self-assessment, and engaging in peer movement analysis.
- Exploring strategies for collaborative, student-centered learning environments through meaningful verbal and non-verbal communication, emotion-aware feedback, and positive group dynamics.
- Practicing the Assess & Plan, Implement, and Reflect & Review phases of lessons in the beginner zone through group, paired, and individual teaching activities.
- Participating in group and individual activities that strengthen skills across the full Learning Connection Model in preparation for Level I Assessment.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:
- Obtain a higher level of understanding of the role of the professional instructor in student-centered learning in the beginner zone.
- Gains practical experience across the Learning Connection Model with skills supporting the goal of AASI Level I Certification.
