Description:
Getting ready to attend a Level 1 Assessment? This course will help you prepare for this first step in your exciting career as an adaptive instructor. Through the lens of the Learning Connection Model, gain an understanding of the Fundamentals (technical, teaching and people skills) in the beginner/novice zone. Through on-hill practice, peer-to-peer activities, teaching scenarios and group discussions, become familiar with the format, assessment criteria and activities of the Level 1 Assessment. Participants should arrive prepared to be on snow for two days and able to slide safely on all green and blue terrain.
Learning Experiences:
Specific activities will vary depending on group needs and conditions, and typically include:
- Practicing Level I assessment activities as well as activities to improve performance and understanding.
- Reviewing the Assessment Forms, Assessment Activities and Assessment Criteria.
- Guided group discussions.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the components of student assessments, including students’ cognitive, affective, and physical abilities and needs, and how equipment selection, setup, and tactics influence learning.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the most common diagnoses – as well as applicable medication classifications and their potential side effects.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of technical tactics and communication strategies for working with and guiding beginner/novice-zone students in the mountain environment.
- Adapt the Teaching Skill Learning Outcomes relative to working with students and facilitates learning experiences moving toward the agreed-upon outcomes.
