Description:
How can we use trust, play, and adaptive strategy to unlock learning for neurodiverse athletes? This immersive clinic blends indoor and on-snow learning to help multi-discipline adaptive instructors (Alpine, Snowboard, and Telemark) effectively coach athletes with autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, and other cognitive differences. Participants will explore People, Teaching, and Technical Fundamentals from the Learning Connection Model while aligning with Adaptive Cognitive Specialist Learning Outcomes at Level I and above. Through developmental theory, inclusive communication, and creative terrain use, participants will gain strategies to build confidence, engagement, and skill progression for diverse learners.
Adaptive instruction experience is recommended.
Learning Experiences:
Specific activities will vary depending on group needs and conditions, and typically include:
- Interactive sessions on developmental theory and inclusive teaching strategies.
- Role-play of greetings, sensory check-ins, and emotional regulation techniques.
- On-snow games and drill adaptations for varied ability levels.
- Peer-teaching scenarios with feedback
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:
- Build trust-based relationships using student-centered communication.
- Apply Piaget’s and Kohlberg’s developmental theories to adaptive lesson design.
- Adapt games, terrain selection, and teaching aids to meet diverse learning needs.
- Use fundamentals of ski/board performance to create functional and fun drills.
- Demonstrate alignment with Adaptive Cognitive Specialist Level I Learning Outcomes for People and Teaching Skills.
