The premier event for Snowsports instructors is only a week away!  You can gain up to the minute information on conditions before you travel by logging on to www.killington.com. Killington Spa is offering discounted services throughout the week.  Advanced reservations are recommended and can be made by calling the Killington Grand Spa at 802-422-1050.

Killington has instituted a policy that all individuals who receive a lift ticket will be required to sign a waiver. If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to complete the Killington waiver to save time during registration. Thanks in advance for your understanding!

Killington is working hard to have top to bottom terrain open; however, early season conditions are always a possibility. Early season conditions can be variable and are not suitable for first-time skiers and riders. Participants at a minimum must be capable of safely skiing/riding on all blue square terrain and some black diamond terrain. The PSIA-AASI Eastern Event Participant Safety Policy will be enforced throughout the week.

 

 

 

Check-in begins Sunday, December 10 at 5:00pm

Check-in will be open from 5:00pm to 6:30pm on Sunday evening. The check-in desk will be located on the second floor of Snowshed Lodge. All participants should check in to pick up your name tag and ensure you receive continuing education credits for attending. If you can’t make it Sunday evening, check-in will also be open on Monday morning from 7:00am to 8:45am.  Groups will begin forming at 8:45am on Monday morning, please be booted up and ready to ski/ride. Specific meeting locations are identified on the map – simply meet your groups at the designated meeting area. Additional group splits will be made at that time.

Your name tag will be your ID Badge to gain access to all the après ski activities during the week. Join us on Monday afternoon for the National Team Presentation, Tuesday’s Membership Meeting, and of course the Thursday afternoon reception! Read on for more information!

Please note Killington Resort is currently a cashless resort (we can accept cash for T-Shirts and raffle tickets), please plan accordingly.

Our 2023-2024 Eastern Region “One Snow” T-shirts designed  by Kirsten Ford will be available for sale throughout the week. Proceeds will go to support Eastern Team candidates for the National Team Tryout in the Spring of 2024. We have men’s or women’s shirts for $25 each. We can accept cash, check, or credit.  You may purchase your T-shirt at the registration table beginning Sunday, December 10 at 5:30pm.  You may also purchase a T-shirts at the Annual Membership Meeting on Tuesday, or at the Reception on Thursday.  Help support our Eastern Team!!!

Morning Yoga Session Offered at 7:15am Tue, Wed and/or Thurs

There is an option to join the morning Yoga session in Snowshed Lodge – third floor on Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday. No need to sign up, feel free to join on all three days, open to all, please bring your own mat. The morning yoga sessions will run from 7:15am to 8:00am. Karen Dalury will be leading the group during these sessions. Karen is currently an examiner for PSIA Telemark and a certified personal fitness trainer. Her sessions are therapeutic, uplifting and most of all fun. This is the perfect opportunity to improve balance and flexibility this early in the season!

The experience of teaching snow sports is more than just the service provided by the instructor or school. It includes the resort, snow conditions, weather, equipment, safety and pedagogical approach and circumstances facing each individual. Are we capable of adjusting our services and teaching plan to meet the needs and expectations of varied guests? The National Team members will share knowledge, insight, and innovative ideas to shape our future lessons to sustain, grow and inspire the future of the Snow Sport Experience! Join us on Monday afternoon in the Oscar Wilde Ballroom at the Killington Grand Summit from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. 

 

 

 

Annual Membership Meeting – Tuesday at 4:30pm in NorthStar Conference Room!

The Annual Membership Meeting & Open Forum will be held in the NorthStar Conference Room at the Killington Grand Hotel on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30pm.  Join Eastern Region CEO, Kathy Brennan, as she provides an update and insight into the state of our organization and future plans.  Engage in a discussion to elevate the value of a certified snowsports professional and explore new offerings from the Eastern Region.  The Area Rep meeting will follow immediately after.

They wrote the New Book – Teaching Children Snowsports: Alpine Field Guide

Apres Fireside Chat: Co-Authors Mark Aiken and Kevin Jordan

On Wednesday afternoon at 4:30pm, join Mark Aiken and Kevin Jordan for their Apres Fireside Chat.

Being a great skier or rider is one thing; it’s another to write about snowsports. Mark and Kevin are co-authors of Teaching Children Snowsports and Teaching Children Snowsports: Alpine Field Guide (the latter was also co-authored by Ryan Ravinsky). Hear about their adventures in snowsports-writing, learn about the Manual and the Field Guide, and even get tips for your own snowsports-writing journey. 
 
Kevin is a PSIA-AASI National Team member, PSIA-RM Examiner, and supervisor at Aspen-Snowmass, CO. Mark is a PSIA-E Children’s Examiner and Alpine Dev Team member and instructor at Stowe, VT.

We are excited to announce that demo vans will be available this year near the base of the Superstar lift on Thursday, December 14 and will also be joining us for our Reception in the Oscar Wilde Ballroom from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. Everyone is invited to stop in to see our sponsors, enter your name to win prizes at the auction and mingle with fellow colleagues from the entire Eastern Region. You may purchase your raffle tickets during the reception; cash will be accepted for these tickets. Tickets will be drawn after the awards announcements and winners can pick up their items at that time. The following options will be available on Wednesday, December 13 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm (1:30 start time for the indoor Yoga session) for Snow Pro Jam and Master’s Academy participants (Colleges will not participate in the elective sessions on Wednesday afternoon, colleges will stay with their course conductor until the assessment portion.)  Some sessions are indoors, and some sessions are on snow, and several are limited! You will receive a link on Monday, December 11 with the option to register electronically – no sign in sheets on Tuesday morning! Below are the descriptions and limitations for each. Please take a moment to review the options prior to Monday when we send out the link at 6:00pm.

Join Brian Donovan, National Team Member, for an afternoon of riding and discovering some of the terrain Killington has to offer! Limit of 8.

How to Embody Park SMART Tactics in Real Lessons

Join Ryan Christofferson, Peter Novom and Bonnie Kolber in this freestyle session promoting safety and progression in freestyle lessons. This will be open to all disciplines and will focus on coaching in the terrain park while embodying the Park SMART methodologies. Participants can come to this session with an interest in personal skiing/riding improvement in the terrain park with coaching from our Ed Staff or the participants can come strictly for the educational and theory content of how to actively coach and teach safely in a terrain park. Limit of 24

Women Only – A Mountain experience for the ladies and a favorite in year’s past! Limit of 24

Creativity for All Instructors

Channel your inner child and learn how to make lessons and training creative and fun. Yup, it’s fun to learn how to be a better skier or rider but adding some pizazz and laughter is even better. The Advanced Children’s Educators (ACE) and Eastern Education Staff will guide you through the process of creating a fun environment for your students. Limit of 16.

First Turns- Learn to Mono-ski and Bi-Ski

Join the Adaptive Education Staff (Augie and Norm) on the Learn to Carpet outside of Snowshed for a hands-on opportunity to learn to mono-ski and bi-ski.  Open to all disciplines, group members will have the opportunity to get in state-of-the-art sit skiing equipment, ride the lift, and make first turns. Add to your teaching experience and learn how skiing is skiing and the fundamentals are all the same, no matter what kind of skiing or riding you do. Folks interested in learning, but not skiing, sit equipment are welcome to join. Group to meet at the base of the Learn to Carpet. Helmets required. Limited of 16.

Alpine Skiing Assessment Activities

Eastern Alpine Examiners will lead the group through a variety of assessment activities that may be encountered in a Level II or Level III Skiing Assessment.

Multi-discipline Movement Analysis Skills

Open to participants of all disciplines. This session led by Snowboard and Alpine Examiners, Tom Vickery, and Dave Wisniewski, will focus on strategies and techniques to perform movement analysis on people sliding on any gear. There will be a large focus on Movement Analysis concepts and models, the Observe, Evaluate, Prescription Model, and the Skiing and Snowboarding Technical Fundamentals that emphasize the cause-and-effect relationships between how we move our bodies and the effect it has on our gear. Whether you are planning to work on your skills as you prepare for a certification assessment, or simply want to polish up your skills to provide better experience for your guests and clients, this session will focus on you as the participant. Limit of 24.

Explore Killington!

This group will be split based on how hot you like your salsa!  We will have a mild, medium, or hot group.  Plan for a relaxing afternoon of skiing with friends on some nice groomers at a nice easy pace or just the opposite with skiing the more challenging terrain Killington has to offer!

Vertical Limit

If the lift is still runnin’, you’re still turnin’…. sound like you? Well, this is the spot. Join up with some “Vertical Junkies” like yourself for some excitement, and well…lots of turns!!

 
 

 

 

Indoor Options

Indoor Session: Yoga for Recovery!

Start Time is 1:30pm in the Northstar Conference Room, Killington Grand Resort Hotel.

Pam Greene – PSIA-E Alpine Examiner and Yoga Alliance 200RYT

Pam has training and experience in Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra. Join her and Kristi Robertson for this two-hour session that will include time to stretch sore muscles, enjoy some restorative poses and finish up with a reenergizing yoga Nidra session. Recharge your body for the second half of the week. Please bring a towel and, if you have your own mat, bring it along. A limited number of mats will be available if needed.  Limit of 25.

 

Indoor Session:  Biomechanics

Start Time is 1:00pm in Gateway I Conference Room, Killington Grand Resort Hotel.

Sue Kramer, Alpine Examiner Coach

Biomechanics looks at cause-and-effect relationships between body movements and ski/board performance. In this indoor course, we will use knowledge of the needed manipulations of a snowboard or skis against a snow surface to, first, identify efficient use of joints and muscles in our bodies to affect the ski/board. With this basis, we will actively explore a range of dryland, gym and at-home activities which can serve to prepare muscles, joints, and our proprioception system for the upcoming snow season. Limit of 35.

 

Indoor Session:  Bootfitting 101 – How boots differ and what makes the right boot.

Start Time is 1:00pm in Gateway II Conference Room, Killington Grand Resort Hotel.

Doug Stewart – PSIA-E Alpine Examiner and former Tech Team Member

Join Doug Stewart for an exploration of equipment styles and modifications, and resulting body alignment. Boot fitting methods including canting, heel and toe lifting, shims and more will be discussed with an eye to improve skiing efficiency. Please note that due to limited time, individual boot fitting will not be offered; instead, participants should leave equipped to engage in meaningful partnerships with their own boot fitters. Limit of 25.

 

 

 
Pro Jam and Master’s Academy Awards!

Each season, course conductors nominate and select recipients for these awards: The winners are announced at the Thursday evening reception at 6pm.

BENJI AWARD  This award is given to a Level I Instructor who conveys the true spirit of skiing, showing us all that true sportsmanship, patience, humility, and humanity can be a way of life.

BILL MULLER AWARD – This award is given to a Level II Instructor in recognition of his/her great spirit, enthusiasm, and contributions to the sport of skiing and in ski teaching.

MASTER’S AWARD – This award is given to a Level III Instructor in recognition of his/her dedication to the highest level of professionalism in ski teaching and of sincere, deep commitment to the sport of skiing and the ski industry.

KARE ANDERSON FREE HEEL AWARD – Recognizes the extraordinary commitment to promote free heel skiing and inspire others in living the Nordic life.

ADAPTIVE SNOWSPORTS AWARD – Recognizes outstanding effort and commitment to providing empowering experiences for individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities and chronic illnesses through dedication to Adaptive Snowsports instruction.

SHRED AWARD – This award recognizes the passion, commitment and great spirit for snowboarding while promoting the culture and mountain lifestyle.
