Course Description:
How can tethering skills be refined to promote independence, safety, and performance? This two-day adaptive learning lab is designed for multi-discipline adaptive instructors working with stand-up skiers, sliders, and sit-skiers (bi-skis) using tethering systems. This course is not for beginner tetherers; it is designed to workshop and refine tethering skills to maximize the
performance of tethered skiers. Participants will explore Alpine and Snowboard Technical Fundamentals in the context of tethering techniques while aligning with Adaptive Bi-Ski Specialist, Adaptive Standup Specialist and Alpine/Snowboard Technical Skills Learning Outcomes for Levels I-III. On-snow sessions focus on tactical adaptations, terrain choice, and progressive release methods to foster athlete autonomy while maintaining control.
Learning Experiences:
Specific activities will vary depending on the session selection, group’s needs and environmental conditions and typically include:
• Equipment setup and tether system comparisons (bi-ski fixed vs. handheld, sliders, harnesses).
• On-snow application of pressure control, edging, and rotary movements while tethering.
• Peer video analysis to identify enabling vs. restricting instructor movement.
• Assessment task practice for Levels I-III with clinician feedback.
• Progressions to reduce tether dependence and increase athlete decision-making.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:
• Demonstrate tethering techniques that promote safe and independent movement.
• Apply discipline-specific fundamentals while managing speed and direction through tethering.
• Select terrain and adapt tactics based on student needs and goals.
• Analyze adaptive athlete movement patterns and adjust tactics accordingly.
• Use the six-point assessment scale and national standards to evaluate their own teaching and technical execution.
• Align tethering technique with Adaptive Bi-Ski Specialist Technical Skills Learning Outcomes for the intended certification level.
Prerequisite(s):
• MUST have previous tethering experience
• Minimum PSIA-AASI Level I Alpine or Snowboard certification OR equivalent teaching experience
• Familiarity with sit-ski equipment and adaptive teaching progressions
Recommended Learning Resources:
• PSIA-AASI Adaptive Certification Standards – Bi-Ski Pathway
• PSIA-AASI Adaptive Certification Standards – Standup Pathway
