Course Description:
How can instructors develop their own independent sit-skiing skills while building a stronger understanding of effective mono- and bi-ski performance? This two-day event is strongly recommended for adaptive instructors pursuing certification in the Mono-Ski or Bi-Ski pathways, as well as those looking to strengthen their technical skills through independent sit-skiing. Participants will practice assessment activities aligned with the Adaptive Mono-Ski and Bi-Ski Performance Guides, using video review and the six-point assessment scale to identify strengths, opportunities for improvement, and alignment with assessment criteria. Participants may have opportunities to ski independently in mono- and bi-skis on green and blue terrain, based on equipment availability, individual readiness, and appropriate risk management.
PSIA-AASI Level I Alpine certification OR equivalent adaptive experience are recomended. All participants should have the ability to operate or support independent sit-ski equipment.
Learning Experiences:
Specific activities will vary depending on the session selection, group’s needs and environmental conditions and typically include:
• Equipment adjustment, rigger setup, bucket alignment, and shock tuning.
• On-snow practice of edge control, rotary movements, and trunk alignment.
• Movement analysis focusing on sit-ski performance indicators.
• Video analysis and clinician feedback for assessment preparation.
• Peer feedback sessions using the six-point assessment scale.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:
• Adjust sit-ski equipment to meet terrain and student needs.
• Demonstrate skill blending in independent mono- and bi-ski turns.
• Apply adaptive fundamentals across varied turn shapes and terrain.
• Accurately observe and describe student performance using cause-effect analysis.
Recommended Learning Resources:
• PSIA-AASI Adaptive Certification Standards – Mono and Bi-Ski Pathways
• PSIA-AASI Adaptive, Alpine, Snowboard Technical Manuals
• Adaptive Alpine Performance Guides
Equipment/Materials Needed:
• Alpine, Snowboard or Telemark equipment suitable for a variety of terrain and conditions.
• OPTIONAL: personal Sit-ski equipment (bi-ski, sliders, tethers, outriggers)
PSIA-AASI Eastern partners with local adaptive programs to provide equipment for this course. Please be aware that equipment availability and sizing may be limited.
