Course Description:
Course Name: Level III Exam Prep Teaching
Discipline: Alpine
Time: 2 Days (12 credits)
Environment: Advanced Terrain
Prerequisites: Level II Certification and successful completion of the Level III online Professional Knowledge exam.
Course Description:
This clinic is designed to help instructors become familiar with the format of the Level III Teaching Exam; more adept at using activities to improve ski performance in the advanced zone; and more proficient with the application of the technical, teaching and people skills in the Learning Connection Model. Participants will practice assessing the ski performance of the group and coaching in conditions and speed appropriate to the Level III zone.
Personal skiing improvement is not the focus of this event. Each participant will have opportunities to assess performance, present an activity for a given situation, and explore how to adapt teaching segments for varied student profiles. This event is ideal for participants who would like the opportunity to teach in exam conditions while being evaluated by a trainer/examiner.
Learning Experiences:
Specific activities will vary depending on the group and environmental conditions; however, they will typically include:
• Reviewing the format of the Level III Teaching Exam.
• Reviewing and understanding how the skills in the Learning Connection Model – technical, teaching and people skills, are successfully used in ski teaching.
• Observing and describing how the body is moving, should move, and how the skis should interact with the snow as they relate to the Skiing Fundamentals and identifying cause and effect.
• Sharing activities to promote changes. The activities chosen must be mountain skiing and/or Agility/Versatility tasks appropriate to the advanced zone. Teaching will be done in or lead to significant time spent in conditions and speed appropriate to the Advanced zone.
• Understanding how to incorporate Teaching Styles and VAK into coaching.
• Practicing how to interact with the group and trainer/examiner in a way that it is evident the group is engaged and understands activities and directives.
• Sharing how to adapt activities and communication for different ages and stages of development.
• Delving into strategies and tactics for dealing with exam anxiety for a successful performance.
• Understanding, through practice teaching segments, interactions, and feedback, how your performance reflects the Learning Connection Model – Technical, Teaching and People Skills relative to the National Standard.
